Abstract: This article is dedicated to the works of Mitrofan Sergeevich Rukavishnikov, the founder of one of the greatest sculptural dynasties of Russia. Due to the archives and few memoirs of his contemporaries it was possible mostly to restore his creative way generally devoted to the search in the area of synthesized forms of art. Starting his experiments in this direction in his youth, being in Italy, he continued them, coming back to the Motherland. One of the bright results of this work was the creation known as “moving fresco”, about which Soviet press wrote a lot in those days. In the middle of 1920-ies he actively worked in the field of theater and decorative art, inspired by the popular idea of performances intended for mass celebrations. In 1930-ies Rukavishnikov made a number of architectural and cultural projects where the synthesis of the architecture and sculpture was at the forefront. At the same time the master became friends with a famous architect I.V. Joltovsky. It was M. S. Rukavishnikov to whom an (unrealized) idea to organize “a synthetic workshop” belonged while setting up architectural workshops in 1932, first of which was run by I. V. Joltovsky. In late 1930–1940-ies Mitrofan Sergeevich was able to implement a number of monumental projects where he showed himself primarily as a sculptor. M. S. Rukavishnikov died in 1946 due to the heart disease.
