Abstract

The paper explores peculiarities of space perception and influence of its parameters on human behavior in different types of spaces, which is expressed through communicative practices of society. As the paper suggests the birth of a person implies its positioning in a certain space that is related to its body location. The space exploration starts at birth and is linked with the issues of orientation in space and self-identification with certain places and ways of reaching them. The paper arrives at conclusion that communicative practices constitute the core of social space, including the exchange of information, a system of actions directed at other people and underlying the structure of social differentiation. The paper provides analysis of the architectural space influence on individual behavior, both at the level of “space-place”, associated with home or workplace, and “space-path”, associated with necessary movements of an individual in the outer space — streets, cities, etc. The study draws upon the delineation of personal and public spaces concluding that communicative practices that emerge in the space of private relationships are regulated more strictly than ones emerging in a public space. As a result, humanity has formed archetypes of behavior connected with a certain type of space: the archetype of a street, a yard, etc. exemplified in the etiquette. The author concludes that communicative practices are directly connected to the forms and types of space in which they occur, which allows for establishing of certain types of behavior that reflect positioning of individuals in the environment.
