Abstract

Basing on the example of one of the oldest Moscow factories “Trekhgornaya manufactory” the paper studies the features of formation and development of professional designing of artistic printed textiles in Russia in the transition from handicraft to manufactory and factory stages of production. The production of printed textiles was a well-tuned industry in Western Europe as early as by the end of the 17th century, so that creating designs for textiles was already a professional engagement. At the turn of 18th–19th centuries in Russia the process of transition from the archaic artisanal principles to the new foundations of enterprise organization is just beginning. In an effort to increase the competitiveness of production, owners of factories in the early nineteenth century are beginning to adopt the working methods of Western companies. Seeing the need for competitive staff, the owner of the “Trekhgornaya manufactory” V. Prokhorov opens a school for gifted children. Along with traditional canonical patterns the enterprise introduces compositions of its own. The experience of the Prokhorovka manufactory attests to the competitiveness of domestic production at the foreign markets and high quality of its designs.
