Abstract

The article addresses the issues of chronology and territorial distribution of medieval tombstones of Tver type, whitestone slabs with a carved image of T-shaped cross. The authors provide a list of all such monuments known by now, and introduce into scientific literature new ones found in the course of archaeological excavations on the territory of Tver Assumption Zheltikov monastery situated near Tver. Considering the chronology of Tver type gravestones usage the authors come to the conclusion that these monuments appear in the middle of the 15th century and stay in use up to the middle of the 16th century almost exclusively within the territory of Tver Grand Principality. Thus the gravestones with T-shaped cross come to be the characteristic feature of the Tver land culture in the Middle Ages. Findings of the gravestones of Tver type made over the borders of the Tver land can be explained by the presence of the Tver land inhabitants in neighboring territories such as Uglitch and the Russian North. The authors also touch on the issue of origins of the tradition of engraving T-shaped crosses on the gravestones of Tver type suggesting it is due to the influence of Balkans natives migrated to Rus’.

Keywords

Grand Principality of Tver, medieval gravestones, T-shaped cross, South Balkans influence.
