Abstract

The paper looks at the traditional as well as recent accents in studies of Protestantism and protestant culture and introduces a letter from the correspondence of the author with a distinguished German Slavonic scholar, historian, theologian, L. Muller noteworthy in a number of aspects — theological, historical and literary studies. It deals with the traditions of understanding of Protestantism in Germany and Russia within the cultural studies` frame, as well as of limitations inherent in them. The author focuses on the role of the Protestantism in establishing of the modern culture and the degree of its involvement in fostering some latent affects and certain negative manifestations of the latter (self-alienation, technogeniс and irrational character of welfare race). The article elaborates on a modern presentation of the given topic and defines the challenges that modern culture, subject to protestantization, as well as the Protestantism itself, faces today. The paper highlights the high degree of interrelatedness between Slavic studies and Protestantism`s problematics (which is once again shown by a given letter and L. Muller`s research as a whole), and the relevance of the further research within this field — multifaceted, subject to changes, in a real life as well as in a science.
