Abstract

An important attribute feature of the Nevyansk icons is the image of landscape, undergoing significant changes over two centuries. The paper traces these changes mainly on the example of one iconography “the Crucifixion with bystanders”. As early as in the first half ― mid-eighteenth century we see the image of hilly landscape with “bonfire” bushes, which, to our opinion, came to the Nevyansk icons from the ancient Novgorod-Pskov iconography via the Stroganov icons and icons of the Russian North. In the last quarter of the 18th century, at the height of the “Pomor” direction flourishing Nevyansk masters often depict scarlet roses on a hilly landscape, which the authors associate with the Kostroma icons of Gury Nikitin`s circle and Western European printed graphics at the limit. The change of style in the Nevyansk icons at the turn of the 19th century also affected the image of landscape. In that way the hillocks with flowers in the icons of “Romanovsky” direction were replaced by multi-colored hills. The paper reveals an overall desire for realism in the works of the Nevyansk masters of the second half of the 19th – early 20th century as exemplified in the images of landscape.
