Abstract

German scientists are known for their outstanding research of Russia, its history and culture. In the present, Russian studies in Germany are being liberated from western cliches of the Cold War period and post-perestroika times. The search for new research paradigms has become more relevant. A complex cultural hybridism raises questions before European Slavists regarding Russia's geographical and cultural affiliation to the West or the East, Europe or Asia. The article presents the collective research of German Slavists, culturologists and sociologists of recent years, dedicated to Russia and its historical fate — from the general philosophical issues of Russian civilization to specific ways of modern media communications. Actual perceptions of Russia within German science have a wide range. Among the Slavists in Germany, voices are heard calling to get rid of mutual fears and projections and deconstruct the topos of Russia as the topos of the “alien” and to openly approach the consideration of the phenomena of Russian civilization. One of the important means of comprehending Russian culture is deemed to be the Russian art. It is traditionally suggested to continue the study of the Euro-forming link within Russian culture, the mutual influence of Russia and Europe. Some German scholars are making persistent attempts to discover an Asian trace in Russian culture in the spirit of neo-Eurasian ideas.
