Abstract

The paper is to introduce a solution to one of the riddles of the final book of Gogol “Selected passages from correspondence with friends”. The problem is associated with an unknown addressee of an article published in a book with a controversial title “Near-sighted friend”. The author suggests and proves that the Gogol correspondent who prompted the writer in 1844 to write this answer was an outstanding and later the state and public figure, journalist and Slavophil philosopher Y. F. Samarin. The paper studies and establishes how the views of Samarin, who began his service career were reflected in Gogol’s article, and why an earlier unknown Samarin`s article dedicated to financial issues and Russian history caused such a sharp criticism of the writer. Gogol’s views are summarized as of one consistent Slavophil-“statesman”. The paper also identifies target orientation of the “Selected places from correspondence with friends”.
