While studying the works and activities of the prominent Old Russian scribes and drawing-artists brothers Basov, the author of the paper published a number of his observations and conclusions about the origin of the “bezvykhodnoie” (imprintless) Gospel of the 17th century. In the scientific literature it used to be defined as Moscow (1615, 1616 or 1619) and then as Nizhny Novgorod (1613) edition. The paper argues that this problem should be treated as independent, since a number of its existing solutions, introduced into scientific discourse, cannot be considered valid in the opinion of the author. In an age when Russia was facing hardships of the Time of Troubles and undergoing complex process of book-printing restoration there were no direct documentary evidences of the very event of the Gospel`s publishing, that is why indirect data and the context of activities of masters that could be involved in this work take on particular importance. Feodor Sergeev, Basov`s son, who was working for Moscow Printing House, was among such persons. Besides historical methods the author relies on structural-elemental analysis for studying ornaments of the book headpieces. The results obtained along with exploring all known documentary and indirect data on the origin of this Gospel in the context of historical events and the activities of persons associated with them give grounds to consider the Moscow Printing House as the place of publication of this book, and the most reliable date of its publication is 1618.
