Abstract

The paper examines the place of reading among the student body. In order to determine the attitude of young people toward reading, a sociological survey was conducted among the students of Tyumen universities. A survey of respondents showed how often they read, their preferences in choosing the way they read, priority reading genres, and other issues. Most respondents try to read every day or at least a couple of times a week, they prefer traditional paper copies of books, like to read detectives, fiction and novels. Half of respondents record a decline in the relevancy of books and reading in society. In their opinion, love of reading should be instilled from childhood. Internet resources, as well as audiobooks that may be downloaded or listened to online from the library site, should be used as the main way to promote reading among young people. The paper suggests creating online resources of free and no charge access with appropriate services everywhere on the basis of scientific libraries. For mobile devices, the application of online libraries may become a “notebook for reading” with user-friendly services, which would open any text files, have a simple menu, the possibility of adding bookmarks, color separation of words and phrases.
