Abstract

Soteriological ideas of soul salvation dominate in the Old Believers’ worldview and spread through spiritual verses. The are several motifs with soteriological meaning depending on initial goals of salvation search: staying in a true (pre-schism) orthodoxy, manifestation of spiritual resilience as well as resistance to the “servants of Antichrist” and personalized government and church representatives, and desire to keep the soul in purity escaping human sins. To reach the goal they should live a righteous life in keeping with ethical values represented in spiritual verses (love, good, humility, meekness, patience, obedience, mercy, honor, honesty, diligence etc.) and follow the rules of the living by faith (attend a church, pray, fast, honor the Christian holidays). Among the main salvation`s conditions the Old Believers` texts cite maintaining the purity of the Old Belief and unity as a method to save oneself as well as the faith in the latter times, observance, and flight from the sinful world into the place of retreat. Thus, the salvation can be achieved by the way of life (how a person acts) as well as the way of thinking. The main didactic purpose of spiritual verses developing the theme of salvation is to remind of these verities.
