Abstract

Basing on the set of documents of the first Russian resident in the Polish-Lithuanian state V. M. Tyapkin (70s of the 17th century), the author seeks to add new facts to the etymology of three lexemes. The word “lesnitstwo”, found in the diplomat’s text, makes it possible to slightly correct the dating of the notion of “forestry” in Russian, formerly included in the context of Peter the Great’s reforms in forest legislation and more distant reforms of the 19th century. Comparison of the text with the Polish source and reference to the literature confirmed correctness of the convergence of “lesnitstwo” and “forestry” and allowed to overcome the difficulties in interpretation of the fragment. Let's look at another example: the word “zither” is remembered in connection with the journey of Peter Tolstoy in 1697–1699, while Max Vasmer mentioned it around 1678. Tyapkin’s papers make it clear that “zither” (“cytry”) was already known in 1676, so that its penetration should not be attributed to the German language mediation. Within the boundaries of Polish culture, the adjective “extraordinary” was borrowed, and then applied to mail matters. Analysis of the lexemes` use in the Polish environment of the 17th century and their comparing with the use of the word by Tyapkin revealed that the resident truly understood the meaning of the expression, previously attributable to the 18th century.
