Abstract

This paper aims to identify the distinctive features of spiritual verse in view of its transition into the environment of Old Believers as well as to justify a conception of spiritual verse as a metagenre of outliturgical spiritual songwriting that came to serve as an instrument for preservation of their ethnic and confessional singularity. The author highlights fundamental differences between the Old Believers’ and Common Russian spiritual verse. Those are based on the attitude of Old Believers towards spiritual verse as a representative sample of culture of the period before the Church Schism translating traditional values and meanings and its perception as an instrument of polemical interaction with their opponents. The differences also become apparent at the level of content, functioning and stylistics. As a result, the meta-genre of Old Believers’ spiritual verse is determined as a component of ethnic and confessional culture. It integrates the genres of outliturgical spiritual singing of oral and book origin, established during different historical periods and representing different regions and creeds. The Old Believers made an outstanding contribution not only to the cause of preservation, but also to the  development of spiritual verse by expanding the boundaries of its functioning and actualization of its content, stylistics as well as by connecting traditions of Old Russian songwriting and outliturgigal spiritual singing of the Modern period.
