| Abstract: | This article observes the history of the Palace of the Soviets architectural contest, which took place in the Soviet Union in the first part of the 1930s. The author of the article determines the huge role of that contest in Soviet prewar architecture and city planning. The paper also reviews the very conception and function of the Palace of the Soviets as a new type of buildings. The main stages of this architectural epopee – from the demolition of Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, where the construction of the Palace was planned, till the wide range of architectural projects created by Soviet and foreign architects are analyzed. The author pays much attention to the winner’s design. Despite the fact that the Palace of the Soviets was never built, it is possible to draw a parallel between huge architectural contest and the following high-rise construction development in Moscow and in the country in general. |
