Abstract: The article is devoted to creative works by Ferdynand Ruszczyc (1870–1936), a prominent Polish painter, graphic artist, cultural worker. The main attention is given to the period of his study at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1892–1897), in the workshops of Ivan Shishkin, and A. I. Kuindzhi. The article, for the first time in Russian research, widely uses materials from «Diary» of Ruszczyc, which significantly complements the information on the role played by Kuindzhi and his workshop in the development of the talent of the young artist. The paper notes closeness of early works of Ruszczyc and his fellow students, especially N. Roerich, A. Rylov. Diploma painting «Spring» (1897) by Ruszczyc was bought by Pavel Tretyakov. Later Ruszczyc participated in the exhibitions «World of Art», was in communication with Alexander Benois and Sergei Diaghilev; his works were highly appreciated by Russian art critics. Landscape «Windmill at sunset» was sold to S. T. Morozov in 1898. Later ties of Ruszczyc with Russia weakened; he became the part of the «Young Poland», participated with great success in local exhibitions, taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Krakow. Many years of selfless teaching connected Ruszczyc to Vilna. The best works in his career belong to the period before 1905, which is most closely associated with Russian culture. It is characterized by inner patriotic aspiration, as is evidenced by the «Diary». The combination of the principles of figurative and pictorial thinking, developed in Russia, and symbolism and neo-romanticism inherent in the «Young Poland», creates a special style of landscapes painting of Ruszczyc. «Earth», «Desolation», «A Winter's Tale», «Old House», an allegory «Nec Mergitur» and et al. are included in the Polish art as deeply personal and national artistic heritage page.
Keywords: national identity, the relationship with the Russian culture, symbolist landscape, elements of expression, pantheism, patriotic aspiration
