Abstract: The compilatory monument «The other legend», collected in the 20-ies of XVII century identifies several types of images of cities and towns. The first type, which includes places of exile and imprisonment far from Moscow, appears in the description of the acts of Boris Godunov and is characterized by the utmost generalization and symbolism of folklore type. The second type is found in the fragments, acquainting the reader with the biography of Gregory Otrepiev and «Izvet (petition)» by the elder Varlaam. Cities are represented there by a single sacred object (monastery or church) and serve as a means of indirect negative characterization of False Dmitry I. The third type has concise lists of criminal towns of Seversk land, which as «city-whores» oppose to Moscow as a «city-virgin». In the text there is a series of echoes from the Book of Revelation by John the Theologian, confirming the possibility of interpretation of the Seversk lands as Russian Babylon at the Time of Troubles. While comparing similar lists in the Russian and foreign sources, we can come to the conclusion, that the compiler of «The other legend» introduces in this way the major theme: the town is first of all its people. It is their emotions and actions that predetermine the dual perception of the city. From the political point of view, the towns of Seversk lands are the criminals, «whore towns», from the humanistic point of view, they are towns of people who are solving difficult problems. In general, urban theme, which is sparingly presented in «The other legend» from artistic point of view, is included in a single code, interpreting events of Russian history, and plays an important role in the conception of compiler.
