Abstract: Cultural tradition of Vesegonsk district of the Tver region is characterized by its local originality, due to the long interethnic interaction of Russian and Karelian population in the given territory. Genre system of traditional folklore of the district round dance and dance songs are notable for their preservation of traditions, variety of the forms and wealth of song repertoire. In Vesegonsk area the performance of musical and choreographic forms is associated with three ceremonial and festive complexes: spring-summer street festivals; autumn-winter gatherings and Christmas conversations and wedding ceremony. When considering the cycle of spring-summer festivities great attention is paid to the description of the ethnographic context in which round dance and dance songs are performed. Identification of the specifics of existence and the nature of the choreographic movement and musical embodiment allows to define the functions of musical-choreographic forms in this tradition. The main functions of the choreographic forms in this tradition are play and communicative functions. In a symbolic form dances managed relations of boys and girls during youth gatherings, and also performed some social function, differentiating the community by age groups. In some cases, round dance and dance songs assume a ceremonial function. Calendar preferences, ceremonial function, the nature of the choreographic movement and manner of performance indicate some connections of musical-choreographic genres in this tradition to archaic ritual forms of folklore.
