Abstract: We consider the origins of the story of Crowning Christ with Thorns in Western art based on the analysis of the text of Scripture, as well as historical and archaeological data. As the result of the penetration of Western traditions into Russian art and under the influence of artists' personal experiences from visiting the Holy Land, the iconography of the Savior's in a crown of thorns was widespread in Russia in the second half of XIX century. On the basis of analysis of examples of such iconography preserved in the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem the comparative analysis was used and an attempt was made to attribute the icon, painted by Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin). The differences in Western and Orthodox tradition in the iconography of the Savior's in a crown of thorns were analysed. The sketch «Savior in a crown of thorns» (1890-s.) from Moscow City Museum by N. A. Koshelev, the artist of the second half of the XIX century, is a bright example of the search for the image of Christ in Russian religious painting. The comparative analysis of this work and the painting of the same name by A. Koshelev, located in Jerusalem, at the St Alexander Metochion was made. As a result we may conclude that the work from the Museum of Moscow is a preparatory sketch for the painting from St. Alexander Metochion.
