Abstract: Nikolay Semenovich Samokish (1860–1944), a painter of battle scenes, Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts, was famous for his works on the theme of Russian history and magnificent artistic skills in creating images of horses. The artist lived most of his life in St. Petersburg, and collaborated fruitfully with almost all major Russian publishing houses, as well as worked to order by the Imperial Court. In Soviet times these works were underrated and forgotten. The most famous book and graphic work of N. S. Samokish is his numerous illustrations for the publication of N. I. Kutepov «Royal hunting in Russia» (in four volumes). When analyzing the design of the book, it becomes clear that the artist knew the history of book design in Russia and relied on its traditions. In the edition the artist used not only different kinds of ancient fonts, but a large number of Old Russian ornaments. N. S. Samokish used the uniform stylistic decision for the first and the second volumes; he followed a similar color range, while keeping in mind old Russian versions. In the design of the book N. S. Samokish synthesized different approaches by using an historiographical approach. He turned each of the volumes into the reflection of a certain period in the life of the country and at the same time made the publication a vivid example of the Russian book publishing.
