Abstract: The Parisian diary of Russian artist Constantin A. Somov is a valuable historical source. It has never been published properly, only in small parts. Somov happened to be in the whirlpool of the most important processes in art life of Russian immigrants, and took real interest in getting acquainted with both creations and creators of the wide range of art schools of that time - from the most radical modernists 218of Paris school (such as J. Pougny, M. Kikoïne, M. Chagall) to the defenders of realism traditions from the group «World of Art» (Z. Serebryakova, A. Benois etc). The analysis of the diaries clearly states that regardless of how far the artist mentioned there is deviating from the mimetical principle, the main criteria for Somov is content-richness of the work. Along with that the diary also states that the artist himself does not see the same basic idea in his own works. This paradox gives a different point of view on Somov's works, explains the entire interest the artist took in the world of objects, decorative surface of the things and human body, and also is - at least, partial - explanation why the young artists who took classes with Somov in 1930s never formed their own school, but fell under the inuence of the Association «Icon».
