Abstract

“Van’ka-Tan’ka” is a recurrent song in the texts of the second half of the 19th century, yet the matter of its origin and characteristics remains open to discussion. This study addresses the collections of Russian folk songs, all sorts of song-books, musical texts, as well as testimony of contemporaries which enables to suggest that this author's song appeared in the 1850–1851 in the repertoire of the chorus of the Moscow Gypsies, and was popular among different layers of society and was widespread among common people. Arranged for two voices by A. S. Dargomyzhsky in 1856 “Van’ka-Tan’ka” became popular in the educated society as well. References to the song in literary texts of the second half of 19th – the beginning of 20th century having nothing to do with a musical joke of Dargomyzhsky, reflected its popularity in the common environment and served to designate lower phenomena of art.

Keywords

song “Van’ka-Tan’ka”, origin, specific existence, M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, popularity, duet of A. S. Dargomyzhsky, lower phenomena of art.
