Abstract

“Fifty-year-old uncle, or a Strange disease” (1838), a drama by V. G. Belinsky reflects the romantic relationship of the author with A. M. Shchepkina. However, there is every reason to see the drama as a reflection of the love relationship of the Bakunin sisters not only with the author himself, but also with his immediate friends: N. Stankevich, V. P. Botkin, I. S. Turgenev. This is from this point of view that the drama becomes an important self-reflexive document, which in the late 1830s was the epicenter of individual and group psychological experience in the circle of Belinsky and M. A. Bakunin. Yet whereas the immediate auto-documentary genres of this circle (diaries and letters) had been studied in scientific literature very thoroughly, Belinsky's drama was practically out of scientific circulation. Meanwhile, it is of high interest not only as an established piece of art, but also as an original creative experiment. The paper, through reconstruction of the private life of the Bakunin's and Belinsky's circles, which are currently difficult to comprehend, allows to describe important processes of the spiritual life of Russian society at the end of the romanticism era.
