Abstract

The article studies the reflection of the folk conceptions of lot in military poetry of 1941−1945. The history events actualize the understanding of lot as a tragic life script given from the outside. The paper defines the circle of poets that addressed the image of lot continuously. They include Surkov, Isakovsky, Tvardovsky and Simonov who depicted all the traditional ideas about destiny’s embodiment. The latter is realized through the images of an anthropomorphic creature, road, written predestination, star, bowl. The greatest variety of incarnations of fate is revealed in the work of Surkov. These poets interpret destiny as a collective transforming folk conceptions of lot as a living being in the spirit of Soviet neomythology. The motives of the struggle against destiny are represented poorly while the idea of stoic submission to fate prevails. The paper determines that Tvardovsky and Simonov reconstructed the most ancient layer of ideas. Their poetry reveals primary understanding of lot as part of an integral whole. Basing on this perspective the metaphor of solder’s lot redistribution is created after the death of one of them. The author identifies a change in the perceptions of lot in Soviet military poetry: tragedy of personal life is smoothed out by optimistic image of a collective destiny, while the idea of external predestination associates with the demand of personal activity.
