Abstract

The article explores the dramatic heritage of Johann Gottfried Gregory through the lens of its symbolic content. In particular, the symbolism of the sun and its interpretation in three plays “Artaxerxes action”, “Judith” and “Pitiful Comedy of Adam and Eve”. The author examines symbolism of the sun on different poetic levels, including plot, landscape and sacral level. The sun image, represented in the plays, reflects the court realities of the last quarter of the XVII century, related not only to court ceremonial during the reign of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich, but also to medieval tradition of depicting the sacredness of Royal authority and justification of its legitimacy, which clearly can be traced drawing on the example of the era of Queen Elizabeth I Tudor. In addition, plays of J. G. Gregory contain the detailed landscape metaphor which can also be found in the works of Old Russian literature, allowing us to trace the continuity in the poetics of Old Russian literature from the XII to the XVII century.
