Abstract

This article documents the analysis of traditional forms and modern tendencies in beads usage in Ukrainian costume. It focuses on cultural, geopolitical and trade relations influence on area of beads usage, its amount and quality. The examination of material and photo collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography (REM) as well as written sources (collection inventory, ethnographic research, statistic inventory reports etc.) allowed to identify regional specificity of using beads in a traditional Ukrainian costume in the end of XIX – the beginning of XX century. Analysis of the modern tendencies is based on materials collected by the author on a trip to Ivano-Frankivsk region in 2011 involving special literature on beads and materials of the Ukrainian museums' web sites.
