Abstract

Mass media are an important channel of public opinion’s shaping, though the information they provide is often subjective and full of prejudices. The survey of the Russian, British and American press of the mid-1999 is carried out basing on the materials of the so-called quality press and mass periodical as well. Meanwhile Russian and foreign mass media display contrary appraisals of the military conflict in Yugoslavia, which makes one think of forming and manipulating private and public opinion. In his work “The Role of Indoctrination in Public Life” Russian psychologist V. M. Bechterev in the late XIX century showed unlimited possibilities of indoctrination in comparison with logical convincing. The influence of newspapers on forming the “pseudo-environment” of contemporary man is also thoroughly explored by Walter Lippmann in his work “Public Opinion”.
