Abstract The article aims to examine the relationship of Russia and the Byzantine Empire, including Bulgaria and Serbia, in the field of Church music under second “South Slavic influence” (the end of XIV–XV centuries). The article shows that the Russian-Balkan relations in the late Middle Ages manifested itself primarily in the organization of office under new Jerusalem Typikon, largely upgraded body of hymnography. The hymnography of the South Slavs, who worked in Russia, Metropolitan Cyprian, Gregory of Zambuca and Pachomius, of Serb, brought to Russia echoes of the reform of Tarnovo Patriarch Euthymius, reflected in the style of “weaving of words”. Alongside the works of Russian authors the works of South Slavic poetic hymnography made for the basis of new songs, warmed up by Russian chanters. In mastering of music writing, the development of Russia was ahead of South Slavic countries. While oral tradition dominated in the vocal practice in Bulgaria and especially Serbia, there was a large body of noted manuscripts of vocal music in Russia. Thus we can talk about South Slavic and Balkan “influences” in vocal art only referring to the Church Typicon and liturgical poetry, but no song tradition and musical writing. Later, due to the tendency of unification of the Slavic peoples around new center of Orthodoxy “Moscow — the Third Rome”, in the late Byzantine period, increase in veneration of the South Slavic saints in the liturgical practice of the XVI century was observed.
Keywords choral art Moscow Russia the “second South Slavic influence” Russian-Balkan relations, Moscow — the Third Rome.
