Abstract

Creativity of Serbian naïve artists is inextricably linked with folk traditions and ancestral memory: authors draw their inspiration from archaic images of folk culture and Christian symbolic. In this article the author suggests her own view on the interpretation of archaic characters on the examples of particular works of two of the most extraordinary representatives of the movement — Sava Sekulic and Elijah Bosil Bashichevich. The author consistently examines the work of artists, revealing the basic leitmotivs of their painting. Creativity of Sekulic and Bosilya is a world’s perception of the naive artist: folk motifs intertwined with historical conflicts, mythology mixed with deep religiosity; in their paintings portrayals of villagers are endowed with traits of ancient legend heroes and worldly-wisdom and existential experiences are welded together. The author compares and contrasts the works of artists with other representatives of the movement: the avant-garde techniques of space building in the paintings, unusual plots and technique of painting — individual handwriting of Sekulic and Bosilya consists of those idiosyncratic features.
