Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of traditional and innovative in the representation of space in Russian pilgrimage literature of Peter’s time as exemplified in “Walking into the Holy land” of Chernigov hieromonk Hippolytus Vyshensky. The writer-traditionalist abides by familiar medieval notions of space, understood as a territorial-ethnic and religious reality. Faithful to the hierarchical model of the world, characteristic of religious symbolism and Baroque, Ippolit Vishensky perceives the journey to the Holy land as a way of cognizing God and moral perfection of the individual. The paper shows how two types of spatial systems in “Pilgrimage” interact: real-historical and mythological; it also traces the process of secularization of chronotopical descriptions, and the development of scientific and geographical thinking in the pilgrim, manifested in increased attention toward accurate and detailed descriptions of the topography of the already visited countries of Europe, Asia and Africa. Signs of the New time in travel notes by Vyshensky Hippolytus — dramatic expansion of the geographical boundaries of the pilgrimage, development of the motif of resistance of space and poetizing of its overcoming by the man, the use, except planar world view, of the three-dimensional image; updating of the space measuring system.
