Abstract

National culture manifests itself mainly in semiosphere. One of the most structured aspects of symbols is heraldry, the art of identification of self by means of signs. An important component of this discipline is colour, both in symbolic and linguistic aspects. Colour terminology of different nations is an interesting linguistic phenomenon. It reflects a national picture of the world. Symbolic implication was kept, but hardly caught even by native speakers, it is transposed to the sphere of intuition and subconsciousness. Despite common mechanisms of linguistic development, there are special rules for concrete language based on sociocultural constituent. Colours belong to the basic Indoeuropean lexics, and a lot of terms are partly overlapped. The same colours are intensively used in phraseology. Idioms, figurative language component, function as symbols. Many phraseological units are nearly identical in Russian and English. English heraldic terminology is entirely borrowed and differs from basic lexics. There are no Russian terms in the sphere of heraldry, only archaic colour names with traditional semantics are exploited.
