Abstract

The pace of modern social and political reforms in the Russian-Ukrainian frontier necessitated a detailed investigation of the processes of transformation of the cultural and civilizational identity. Identity Transformation of the former Soviet Union was caused by three interrelated processes: de-Sovietization, globalization as well as parallel fragmentation and integration of identity. The specifics of the transformation of identity in the border regions of Russia and Ukraine is determined by the barrier, the contact and integration of functions of new borders, as well as cultural and historical community areas. The results of their own sociological research allowed to allocate an important degree of overestimation in the transcendent self-perception among population of the border regions, compared with residents of inland areas. External openness of the borderlands causes the emergence of the frontier, which can be represented as a spatial invisible line, giving way to the common identity of the population surpassing national boundaries. However, according to the expert survey, the population of the Russian borderlands relates itself in cultural and civilizational terms with Ukraine more than the inhabitants of Ukrainian border with Russia.
