Abstract: Many famous Russian artists participated in decoration of the temples in the XIX – early XX centuries. V. L. Borovikovsky, F. A. Bruni, K. P. Briullov, O. A. Kiprensky, while painting cathedrals, borrowed the samples of paintings of the Italian Renaissance, trying to move away from the strict canonical Byzantine art. The works of V. M. Vasnetsov, M. A. Vrubel, M. V. Nesterov demonstrate the influence of the early Christian art, close links between the Byzantine and Russian traditions. With time artists started to use the artistic methods of modern. At the turn of XIX–XX centuries Russian monumental church art was greatly influenced by Westen European art. Many artists tried to revive national traditions, turning to Byzantine and old Russian foundations. At the same time the interest of Russian artists to new tendenciesis in art is obvious.
