Abstract: Rethinking of the role of the landscape in Soviet art began in the postwar period. The pilgrimage of young Soviet artists to the Russian North was an evidence of that. V. F. Stozharov, who was one of the first to make the trip to the North, expertly caught and transferred to canvas the beauty of the harsh edges. Already in the first paintings of the artist, made in Siberia, we can see a bold, pasty-like manner of applying paint to canvas, which outshines the necessary precision of drawing, creating at the same time tone and compositional integrity. Unlike Stozharov, in whose works the theme of the North is inseparable from the theme of the Russian countryside, E. I. Zverkov does not strive for accuracy of image of materiality. For him it is much more important to convey the «purity», the virgin primeval landscape that filled Russian North. Northern paintings by V. E. Popkov are compositionally austere in their graphic quality, but have a surprisingly subtle color palette. Interesting examples of plein-air painting can be seen in North works by P. F. Sudakov, V. N. Zabelin and V. P. Kosenkov. In 1970-s. the «Nordic campaigns» of artists A. M. Gritsay, N. E. Zaitsev, V. N. Korkodym and S. I. Smirnov began. They declared themselves as the followers of traditions of Russian landscape painting. Thus, the Russian North is an important and multi-faceted topic of national art, with artistic discoveries yet to come in further research and exhibition projects.
