Abstract: Periods of bloody wars and social cataclysms often generate ominous characters of butchers, murderers and sadists, who often cling to any leader, hero or ruler. Bloody work of these characters can seriously discredit their overlords or discredit the idea, which they «serve». Baron Roman Ungern-Sternberg and his Asiatic Cavalry Division owe much of their disrepute to the Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Sipaylo (Sipaylov). Sipaylo made an impressive career when working in the Ataman Semenov’s torture chambers. But when Sipaylo fell into disgrace, he escaped to baron Ungern-Sternberg, who did not fail to use his bloody service.
