Abstract: The article concerns semantics, functions and mechanisms of injection into the narration of unique (uncrossed) quotations from The Book of Psalms into the text of Extended redaction of The Life of Sergius of Radonezh. Such kind of quotations is rare in ancient Russian hagiography of XV–XVII centuries. Depending on the types of plotlines which are to be commented with biblical quotations and on typical meaning connected with them, four kinds of uncrossed quotations are detected: quotations which are the product of intelligent, mechanical and burlesque biblicising of narration, as well as individual quotations authored by particular scribes illustrating original plots (the exclamation of a baby in mother`s womb, the arrival of a cart with loaves during a hunger) and unverbalized ideas of the life (the gift of the prayer of Saint Sergius as a foundation of spiritual life of the Saint Trinity`s monastery, Moscow line in the Life). The mechanisms of association of contexts of lives and the Bible are described in detail. Those are traditional, overcontextual, conceptual and metaphorical associations.
Keywords: unique (uncrossed) quotations, ancient Russian hagiography, contextual analysis, functions of biblical quotations.
