Abstract: Personality of A. P. Chekhov is a unique cultural phenomenon. An attempt to interpret the category «a subject of culture» as an example of this phenomenon extends the idea of the role of the individual in cultural processes. Certain provisions of the concept of dialogue of cultures and semiotics allow us to rethink the subjectobject and subject-subject relations in the cultural space. Full communication, which is a necessary attribute of the reception of a cultural text and the personality of its author, is possible in the framework of the subject-subject relations. Studying the mechanisms of influence on the culture of artists such as A. P. Chekhov suggests the existence of timeless subjects of culture, i. e. individuals, which are adequate to many socio-cultural contexts. There is no dead forms in culture, there are relevant and irrelevant realities. The relevance of the individual in the cultural space is a measure of «subjectivity».
