Abstract: The article is dedicated to the history of studying the style and canon in western aesthetic science at the end of XIX-XX centuries. The history of styles is considered to be a reflection of changing perception patterns. The influence of visual experience on art, the problems of expression, the concept of style, the problems of form, and visuality are examined in this article. The paper considers the formal method in art and the aesthetic theories of C. Fiedler, J. Gantner, P. Frankl, W. Pinder, H. Wölfflin, A. Riegl. O. Spengler, W. Worringer, A. Luria, R. Arnheim, Hans Urs von Balthasar.
