Abstract

Hierotopy is one of the important directions of modern cultural studies. The center of all Christian hierotopy is the Holy Land (Palestine). The hierotopy of Galilee — a region on the territory of the modern state of Israel is of particular scientific interest. The article is to highlight a number of  theoretical issues of hierotopy and their practical embodiment through the example of the Central part of Galilee. The paper addresses the hierotopic model of Galilee with an urge to distinguish geographical objects and specific settlements (cities, villages) connected with the life of Jesus Christ, the mother of God, apostles or Old Testament prophets. The hierotopy of the Central part of Galilee is, first of all, connected with the mount of Tabor, the cities of Nazareth and Kana. The sacredness of these spaces is sanctioned by the sacred events connected with them, as well as with the shrines of the Christian tradition (e.g. Tabor is associated with the Transfiguration of the Lord, Nazareth — with the Annunciation, Kana — the miracle of turning water into wine).
