Abstract

The article looks at the aesthetics of a TV series by G. A. Panfilov based on the novel by A. I. Solzhenitsyn “The first circle”. The author analyzes the concept of Solzhenitsyn voice-over. Considerable attention is paid to the images of characters, acted by well-known professional actors (Yevgeny Mironov, Igor Sklyar, Dmitry Pevtsov, Inna Churikova, Olga Drozdova) and non-professional performers from the world of theatre and humanities (Evgeny Grishkovets, Boris Lyubimov). The purpose of the article, inasmuch as its volume allows, is to compare the screen`s narration with the novel’s one to identify the differences. The author draws attention to the element of “intellectual fantasy” introduced in the visual images of the eighth episode, to the transformation of the authors’ attitude towards the adherents of totalitarian state and detects new aspects in the “uncle Avenir” screen`s character and his home and garden environment. The paper involves displaying the color solution`s features of the film, spatial and compositional motifs, as well as the key images of the series. The author emphasizes the correlation between the aesthetics of the “The first circle” adaptation and the cultural traditions of the Western Europe, in particular, certain forms of theater, drama, novel. We find that the director of the series updated the latest conception of the mass applied art — so that it may not be identical to the official culture and not always corresponds to the ideological clichés of the epoch.
