Abstract

The author focuses on the anthropological problems in “Dioptra” by Philip Monotropos. This treatise contains the postulates, reflecting the influence of christianized Neoplatonism. From this perspective, Philip does not consider the body and soul as antagonistic principles but regards the two-part nature of man as a harmonious unity. The author also illustrates the influence of humoral theory on anthropological subjects of “Dioptra” allowing conclusions that Philip Monotropos was not a supporter of the conception of free will and interpreted the problem of moral choice from the position of determinism. “Dioptra” also contributed to the respect for the individual, quite rare fact in Christian booklore, influencing the formation of the national consciousness in the age of the battle of Kulikovo. Extracts from the 5th word of “Dioptrа” are provided in the appendix.
