Abstract

The article addresses the issue of educational function of art and its role in the development of the human personality. It starts with detecting a significant departure of contemporary artists from the realist tradition. The author also points out to the insufficient attention towards the study of nature in contemporary art education. At the same time, the paper links up the realistic basis in art and the formation of value orientation of person, emphasizing the role of figurativeness specifically in the context of the educational function of art. The author builds on E. L. Feinberg`s definition of the functions of art, highlighting the educational one, as of fundamental importance in our days. Further the author attempts to assess the modern art from the perspective of the needs of modern society and suggests the course for further development of art. In addition, the article discusses possible reasons for withdrawal and returning of artists to the figurativeness across centuries. The paper reveals that the artistic process of creating paintings is determined by political and historical processes and, most importantly, by the willingness of society to embrace a given type of art. The author arrives at the conclusion that a new round of realistic art, addressed to man's inner world allowing for forming the sense of ethics in younger generation, along with characteristics of educated person of high integrity awaits us in the 21st century.
