Abstract: The article focuses on principles and parameters of describing concepts of the two linguistic schools — linguoculturological and cognitive-discourse school. The study of linguoculturological school enables us to make the following conclusions: 1) a new school investigating concepts has been formed; this is conceptual linguistics; 2) principles and parameters for describing linguocultural concepts have been introduced; and the value parameter which is one of the fundamental characteristics of culture, is also one of the most significant ones; 3) the taxonomic idea of concepts organization has been realized: there are two alternative classifications by M. V. Pimenova and V. I. Karasik; 4) it has been proved that the discourse research of culture concepts is connected with certain types of discourse. The study of cognitive-discourse school enables us to make the following conclusions: 1) principles and parameters for describing concepts have been formulated: there are the field analysis (Z. D. Popova, I. A. Sternin) and cognitive matrix analysis of concepts (N. N. Boldyrev); 2) within the framework of cognitive linguistics some semantic primitives have been described, in particular, concept-primitives expressing the category of aspectuality, which cannot be done with the help of the linguoculturological approach; 3) the classification of concepts has been proposed; 4) a new principle of discourse formation has been formulated, namely: the subject principal. There are the two schools of studying and describing concepts. When analyzing concepts it is impossible to mix up principles and approaches used by different schools.
