  • Abstract: This paper provides a comparative analysis of the leading pedagogical approaches that existed in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century and addressed the issue of civic‑patriotic education of youth. Particular attention is given to the analysis of the key characteristics of the “Russian mentality” and their role in the patriotic educa‑ tion of the younger generation. The study examines the leading approaches that existed in Russia of the early 20th century and related to the issue of civic‑patriotic education, which were developed by renowned public figures, philosophers, and cultural histori‑ ans (N.I. Pirogov, V.P. Vakhterov, V.Ya. Stoyunin, V.N. Soroka‑Rosinsky and others). The identified pedagogical approaches introduced creative adjustments to the content of such categories as “patriotism”, “civic‑patriotic education”, “moral education” and “loyalty and continuity of culture” among students. The author also elaborated on the issue of civic‑patriotic education of youth during the First World War emphasizing the fact that the war, despite its horrific nature, became a period for the realization of moral categories of the individual in terms of socio‑cultural values. The paper comes up with the attempt to highlight the problem of civic‑patriotic education of young men and women and examines the ideas that defined a new content of civic‑patriotic education of youth during this historical period. The study demonstrates that the early 20th century in Russia saw the formation and development of children's amateur associations based on the principle of active participation by young students. Of particular interest is the part considering the issue using the Kursk region as an example.
