- Abstract: The paper analyzes the pragmatic content of paragraphing of syntactic units, which allows to perceive the visual representation of the semantic structure of a literary text; to comprehend the possibilities of development, division, actualization of individual elements of the narrative. It is argued that author's attitude determines the emotional coloring of the paragraph, aimed at a comprehensive solution of pragmatic problems. At the same time, the pragmatic information created by paragraphing is included in the macrostructure of the literary text and is one of the components of its substantive and conceptual information. As a result, paragraphing not only affects the mechanism of creating cohesion, chronological marking, reality (or unreality) of events, but is also essential for understanding the meaning of the work. Attention is focused on the fact that the pragmatic content of artistic paragraphing is largely due to its relationship with the sentence. A conclusion is made regarding the pragmatic potential of a paragraph, which consists in the ability to actualize a sentence break without taking into account the grammatical structure; to emphasize individual parts of a sentence; to separate parts of a complex sentence, while concentrating on the interparagraph connection; to pay attention to connecting means that affect the change in the dynamics of the narrative; to highlight parenthetical constructions, the pragmatic purpose of which is to enhance the significance of additional fragments included in the text; to enhance the functionality of semantically defective units, influencing their reverse semantization, conditioned by the direction of the author's intentions.
