  • Abstract: This study is dedicated to one of the greatest representatives of the Russian sculptural tradition of the late 19th – early 20th centuries, Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts Sergei Mikhailovich Volnukhin (1859–1921). The most important work in his oeuvre was the monument to the first printer Ivan Fedorov, the creation and installation of which in Moscow in 1909 came to be a true phenomenon of the cultural life of the ancient capital of those years. The paper involves archival sources related to this significant event for the first time. Despite the fact that his name is not well known in comparison with other contemporaries, for example, P.P. Trubetskoy, A.S. Golubkina or S.T. Konenkov, and some key works have been lost, however, the surviving legacy gives an excellent idea of his talent: in addition to urban monuments, he was also a master of small‑scale cabinet sculpture. For three decades, Sergei Mikhailovich directed the sculpture workshop at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (and later at VKHUTEMAS until his death), playing a vital role not only in the professional development of young sculptors at the turn of the century but also in the formation of the Russian school of sculpture as a whole. The information presented in this study characterizes the artist's professional and personal life.
